ABOUT HANNES

I was born in Henneman in the vast, stark Free State in South Africa in 1950. I spent my childhood losing myself in nature and enjoying the simple freedoms of small-town living. A formal art education at the Pretoria School of Art for advanced technical education ignited an insatiable love of art within me and I began to acquire the skills necessary to turn my passion into a lifelong career, painting God's creation.

Based in leafy Johannesburg, I have travelled across Southern Africa for many years taking my own reference shots and have had the privilege of being immersed in Africa's diverse cultures and landscapes over the years.

I have been honing my craft and creatively involved in the art scene since the late 70s. My belief is that through observation, the spirit of a place can be portrayed and this has largely shaped my choice of subject matter. Creating a narrative as one filters the visual experience through your own spirit and soul, and in so doing, touches the heart of the observer.

My naturalistic paintings have progressively made a mark on the international art market, with work in private and corporate collections across the world including;

Japan - United States – Italy – Portugal – Germany – UK - Australia - Switzerland

My work has evolved over the years, displaying an integrity and maturity of style. My technique underscores my commitment to my subject and vocation. My work has contributed to many corporate and private art collections. A large portfolio of pieces have also been private commissions by clients and in more recent years sold through Cherie De Villiers of the ‘Cherie De Villiers’ gallery in Hyde Park.

I enjoy the dramatic Summer storms and long warm evenings of the Highveld, the company of my children and their partners and long walks with my grandson. I attribute much of my success to my beautiful wife, who has always encouraged me and my work, and stood by me, through the trials and tribulations that come with devoting one's life to art.

It is my wish to continue to honor God in all that I do, and to continue to showcase his love in my work.

Hannes.
